FLORENCE, 1418
Florence Cathedral waited more than a century for its dome. At its heart was an opening more than 140 feet across, and no one knew how to close it. Brunelleschi designed the dome, invented the hoist that lifted its bricks, and oversaw the work for sixteen years as it rose. Intent, method and outcome came together in one mind, so the decisions he made were ones he had to live with.
The Greeks had a word for that person: architekton, the chief builder.
